dedicated army colonel quit after announcing he had an extramarital affair. it's an fbi affair that's sounding alarms. the fbi was investigating some suspicious e-mails and found some e-mails between paula broadwell and david petraeus. broadwell is the woman who wrote his biography. the fbi looks to see whether his communications had been compromised, and they said they had not been. now, petraeus was interviewed by the fbi, but it's not clear if broadwell has been questioned and if she will be. a u.s. official said petraeus was never a target of an investigation and that a tip about an affair led to that probe. now, general petraeus was scheduled to testify next week about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. now what happens now that he's gone? suzanne kelly is in washington with that part of this big story. >> susan, as washington reels from the announcement not only that david petraeus is stepping down from the post, but also from the admission he was having an extramarital affair, a u.s. official has said the counter intelligence unit was investigating a tip that he was h
to petraeus. james clapper learned of the investigation in a phone call from the fbi on election night. it's it's unclear when the fbi probe began. >> it seems that this was going on for several months and yet now it appears that they are saying that the fbi didn't realize it until election day. gener it just doesn't added a up. >> reporter: why weren't key lawmakers told sooner. >> are you going to investigate why the fbi didn't notify you before? >> yes. this could have an effect on national security. we should have been told. >> reporter: house majority leader eric cantor said an fbi leader told him about petraeus possible affair and possible security breach in october after the investigation began. a u.s. official says the general's communications were never compromised and he was never the target of the investigation. another issue, petraeus stepped down days before he was supposed to testify before a senate committee about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. micha micha michael morell will testify instead. >> we've got to get to the bottom of benghazi. i don't see how in the w
david petraeus is taken over the generalship of the cia. >> and, suzanne, we don't know how long the fbi was investigating, do we know if the obama administration knew about this before the election? >> no, but wouldn't we all love to know the answer to that. that really is a burning question. just days after the election, something like this comes out. clearly something like this had been going on for a while. it wasn't -- you know, it's not likely that a couple of days after the election, general petraeus had a crisis of conscience and decided this is the time now for me to come clean on everything. which also makes you wonder, did other people know about this? was there the possibility they could have used this against him or to black mail him in any way? that would have spoken directly to his ability to protect secrets as well. lots of unanswered questions. more will be coming out in the coming days. >> the other questions, did the administration, if they knew about it decide not to let this be announced before the i election because they didn't want to do anything that would impact
answers. why didn't the fbi inform them of the investigation? and what does this mean for this week's senate hearing on the tedly attack in libya? barbara starr is at the pentagon. barbara, general petraeus was to be a primary witness in that closed door hearing. what now? >> well, by all accounts he will not appear at this week's hearing. the man who will is mike morrell, his deputy and ci airks, now essentially the acting director of the agency. mr. morrell, a highly respected intelligence professional, has been with the agency for many, many years. would know all the same information that david petraeus knows. but the question on the table, carol, is whether that's going to be politically enough for congress. are they so irritated about this entire matter that they will subpoena petraeus in the weeks ahead and compel him to come testify about what he knows about the benghazi attacks? >> barbara starr reporting live for us at the pentagon this morning. this affair is baffling on so many levels. how could a man with such a pristine reputation show such awful judgment? and how could
